The Business of Your Art
Providing business development to the arts community is an endeavor in which I have immersed for over 30 years.....We enter our 31st year in 2011 ~ WOW
Previously as VP of Dolphin Galleries on Maui, from 1980 to 1989 ~ my partner and I developed and opened six retail Fine Art Galleries over the course 10 years and became one of the more successful Fine Art Galleries on Maui ~
It was a spectacular company, with gorgeous locations in one of the most gloriously beautiful places on earth, the island of Maui ~ and we developed that company into a mulit million dollar operation ~ and as art should I experienced a rather significant "wake up" call one day while standing in our galleries in then, the Lahaina Cannery.
I realized that although we operated the retail locations, that it would be possible to better teach artists how to run and manage their own businesses, which would provide a variety of benefits. I thus proceeded, not only to build a rather significant career of my own as an artist outside of Dolphin Galleries, and subsequently went on to share that information with others.
It was not as easy as I had anticipated.....Building my own career was.....attempting to help other artists proved a very difficult challenge, and to this day I am in constant awe as to the level of resistance there is to "learning" the Art of Selling Art ~ Zella Jackson wrote a great little handbook on just that topic.....AND there are so many courses and classes that are available to assist an artist to better understand the nature of the "biz" ~
In fact, our company contacted 3500 Arts Organizations around the country and there was not ONE of those organizations that would, then 10 years ago, participate in training the artist how better to run their business.
The truth be known, and is always the best way ~ EXPERIENCE is the key.
So how do you get experience when you have none ?
The best answer to this which is obviously a little known fact.......
That which drives your creative process.....bringing an art form into existence.....is exactly the same process that one utilizes to develop and build their business....
TRUST your intuition ! TRUST your inner guidence ! TRUST that your just as your hand is led to paint, draw, sculpt or another that your business development, your distribution, your sales, your clients are usually just a handshake away from you.....
Its SO much easier than most make it out to be.....but one has to be willing to listen....

If not.....develop that intuition and use it to your best benefit
